Lab Personnel

Scott Nolte
Associate Professor, State Extension Weed Specialist
My goal is to provide statewide leadership in effective, profitable and sustainable integrated weed management in row crops, pastures, home lawns, golf courses and sports fields in Texas. Timely dissemination of information based on my knowledge and finding from applied research, in concert with the work of colleagues in this and other disciplines, allows Texans to make informed weed management choices.

Zachary Howard
Extension Program Specialist II
In the Extension Weed Science program my objective is to conduct practical and cutting edge research for the growers of Texas that rediscovers, improves upon, and accelerates sound weed science principles in a variety of cropping, forage, and turf settings. Furthermore, I aim to teach these principles through Extension based programming that empowers Texans working in these areas.

Caroline Wayhs Backes
Master’s Student
Carol graduated from the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Agronomic Engineering. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree at Texas A&M University, working with herbicide resistant Palmer Amaranth to better understand how new cases of herbicide resistance are evolving, and what triggers the development of resistance. She is also working with farmers and growers across Texas through surveys to better understand current challenges faced by these stakeholders to further support the development of Extension education.

Christina Ward
Master’s Student
Christina holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Technology and Production Management from Washington State University. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Weed Science at Texas A&M University, where she works under the guidance of Dr. Scott Nolte, the Texas State Weed Scientist. Her research focuses on evaluating the efficacy of a modified post-direct drop nozzle boom to reduce downwind drift compared to standard broadcast boom. This innovative project spans multiple states and targets cotton and soybean production systems.

Justin Chase
Intern
Justin is a student at Oregon State University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Crop and Soil Science with a focus in Agronomy. His undergraduate research focuses on Woolly Croton profiling and control.

Ryan Gibson
Student Worker
Ryan is pursing a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural System’s Management at Texas A&M University. In his role as a Student Technician his responsibilities include maintaining vehicles and equipment, assisting graduate students with their research, and supporting the research operations of the Extension Weed Science program. Ryan performs research in herbicide application technologies with a focus on unmanned aerial application methods and precision agriculture.
